After Dover Castle was commissioned by Henry II, Maurice designed its legendary keep and oversaw much of the castle’s construction.

Maurice earned his nickname, “The Ingeniator,” for his lifetime as a castle builder. He worked on several projects, including the keep at Newcastle.

When he began building Dover Castle his daily wage was equivalent to that of a knight, and he received no less than one sizable raise during its construction.
