 National Affiliation: France
Occupation: King of France
Allies: Prince Louis
Enemies: Henry II, Richard I, King John
Castles: Chateau Gaillard, Dover Castle
Personality: Contentious, Arduous

Philip, already the King of France, claimed the continental lands of England through a legalistic challenge to the wedding of his sister to Prince Henry the Younger. He initially allied with Henry II’s children, Richard and John, in a series of skirmishes against England between 1186 and 1188, but later turned on them when each became king.

Philip was equally contentious in diplomatic matters. He feuded with the Pope over annulments of marriage, the Church as a whole due to the existence of Cathars in France (Philip was indifferent to their practices), and his own nobles.
