Saladin was the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria, but there were limits to his power. Even he could not wrest control of Crac des Chevaliers from the Crusaders.

Salāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (better known to the West as Saladin) founded the Ayyubid Dynasty and later wrested Palestine from Crusader control.

Despite his victory over the Europeans, his enemies knew Saladin as a principled and chivalrous man. Even Richard the Lionheart respected the man’s abilities.
